Prisoners record, 1879-1912.

Prisoner census. Entries consist of prisoner number, name, former occupation, crime, sentence length, age, education, Sunday school attendance, at what age orphaned, whether bound to a trade, temperance, religion, race, sex, marital status, number of convictions, place of birth, county where convicted, date incarcerated, and expiration of sentence. Volumes for 1900-1912 include hair and eye color, complexion, height, weight, and any identifying scars, tattoos, and marks. Cross-referenced by prisoner number to the Commutation Record series [MSA S0251]. Entries for 1879-1905 indexed by the Prisoners Record, Index series [MSA S0254].

The Maryland House of Correction was the second prison established by the state. Authorized by the Laws of 1874, ch. 233, it opened in January 1879. A medium-security facility, it was designed to house convicts sentenced to less than three years' imprisonment. The sentence restriction was lowered to one year by the Laws of 1884, ch. 513, but was restored to three years by the Laws of 1910, ch. 739.
